Book Club Monday

I read about this book, and it really intrigued me.  I normally do not choose "coming of age" books but....Opioid Indiana by Brian Allen Carr stopped me in my tracks.  I am finding it really interesting.  Here is the story:

Set in the beleaguered heart of Indiana’s opioid crisis, Brian Allen Carr’s timely and tender novel about a teen struggling to find his place in the world—and come up with $800 rent—is at once a moving rumination on the hopeful power of story and a harrowing insight into modern America. It is a book you won’t soon forget.

Seventeen-year-old Riggle is living in rural Indiana with his uncle and uncle’s girlfriend after the death of his parents. Now his uncle is missing, probably on a drug binge. It’s Monday, and $800 in rent is due Friday. Riggle, who’s been suspended from school, has to either find his uncle or get the money together himself. His mission exposes him to a motley group of Opioid locals—encounters by turns perplexing, harrowing, and heartening.

With empathy and insight, Carr explores what it’s like to be a high school kid in the age of Trump—a time of economic inequality, addiction, Confederate flags, and mass shootings. Through the voice of its unforgettable protagonist—charismatic, confused, searching, by turns cynical and na├»ve, wise and impulsive—Opioid, Indiana pierces to the heart of our moment. -

You Will Never Make Microwave Popcorn Again!!!!

One of my best "blogging" friends Jessica writes The Entertaining House.  If you don't follow her blog, you definitely should.  It is amazing and she writes beautifully.  I had been following her for years and we eventually met up and I am so lucky that our friendship blossomed.  Jessica is so talented.  Which brings me today's post. She posts the most amazing recipes.  However, I have a soft spot for her  truffled popcorn.  I make it all the time.

Olive oil
White Truffle Oil
Popcorn kernels
Sea Salt
A large pot with lid

Fully coat the bottom of your pot with a combination of the olive and truffle oils (roughly 3-4 tbs)
Add a very generous amount of salt to the bottom of the pan (the popcorn will absorb some but much will also stick to the pan)
Turn the heat on to high
Add enough kernels to fully cover the olive oil
Listen,  as the kernels begin to pop
Turn the heat down slightly and gently shake the pot
Listen carefully and when the popcorn slows and nearly stops popping remove the pot from the burner. WARNING: The bottom will be very hot so place on a hot plate or on another burner.
Remove the lid and carefully drizzle more Truffle Oil over the popcorn.
Add more sea salt and some pepper to taste
If its not devoured right away it tastes as good the next day!

Book Club Monday

I have had my eye on this book for a while.  Though the subject matter of a funeral seems odd for a Book Club Monday Choice, the recipes and southern traditions featured in this book are really fun and it turned out to be a great read. That is why I choose Being Dead Is No Excuse:The Official Southern Ladies Guide To Hosting The Perfect Funeral for this week.  Here is the summary:

In this deliciously entertaining slice of Southern life (and death), inveterate hostess Gayden Metcalfe explains everything you need to know to host an authentic Southern funeral. Can you be properly buried without tomato aspic? Who prepares tastier funeral fare, the Episcopal ladies or the Methodist ladies? And what does one do when a family gets three sheets to the wind and eats the entire feast the night before a funeral?

Each chapter includes a delicious, tried-and-true Southern recipe, critical if you plan to die tastefully any time soon. Pickled Shrimp, Aunt Hebe's Coconut Cake, and the ubiquitous Bing Cherry Salad with Coca-Cola are among the many dishes guaranteed to make the next funeral the most satisfying one yet.

Welcome Back Pastis!!!!!!

Pastis  is back!!!!!! Keith McNally's beloved french bistro has returned to the Meatpacking district and re-opened after it's 5 year hiatus.  He has partnered with another James Beard Awarding winning chef, Stephen Starr, of Le Cou Cou fame.  The menu remains the same classic french bistro flare.  It is as delicious as ever. I could not resist the artichoke hearts and the mussels in white wine.  Both were incredible.  But if the incredible menu does not get you there..the scene definitely will.  I met my childhood friend Leeann, yes the one who deserted me for Maine, in NYC on Tuesday night. PS The last time she was there in the old location she was with Justin Timberlake!!!!!!  Back to our night...We arrived at Pastis 1 hour before our reservation and we were just so happy to chill on the bench by the door, honestly the best seat in the house, until our table was ready  The hostesses were so accommodating.  They kept coming over telling us they were working on the table.  They genuinely cared about us waiting and made it a priority to accommodate us, even though we were the early ones. And this is the "it" new restaurant.  Everyone is dying to be seated and they were worried about US!!!!  Amazing customer service. The restaurant was crawling with celebrities.  Sweet Zac Posen was checking in with us.  Keith McNally was in the back with his posse and literally right behind our table was John Legend.   Pastis is the hot place of the moment.  RUN!!!!!!!!!

Book Club Monday

This weeks book is a fabulous moving novel, Ask Again, Yes: A Novel by Mary Beth Keane.  Here is the story:

How much can a family forgive?

A profoundly moving novel about two neighboring families in a suburban town, the friendship between their children, a tragedy that reverberates over four decades, the daily intimacies of marriage, and the power of forgiveness.

Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope, rookie cops in the NYPD, live next door to each other outside the city. What happens behind closed doors in both houses—the loneliness of Francis’s wife, Lena, and the instability of Brian’s wife, Anne, sets the stage for the explosive events to come.

Ask Again, Yes is a deeply affecting exploration of the lifelong friendship and love that blossoms between Kate Gleeson and Peter Stanhope, born six months apart. One shocking night their loyalties are divided, and their bond will be tested again and again over the next 40 years. Luminous, heartbreaking, and redemptive, Ask Again, Yes reveals the way childhood memories change when viewed from the distance of adulthood—villains lose their menace and those who appeared innocent seem less so. Kate and Peter’s love story, while haunted by echoes from the past, is marked by tenderness, generosity, and grace.

This Old Show HOUSE!!!!

My amazing sponsors Iconic Modern Home invited me to a fabulous show house that they just finished staging with the PBS show This Old House.  It is a 6,000 square foot Greek revival farmhouse located in the historic district of New Caanan.  I spent the entire day there today and BOY am I ready to move in.  Here are some of the highlights of this incredible home.......Don't forget...staging WORKS....consider Iconic Modern when selling your home....

There were so many details left from the original antique farmhouse...look at how they showcased one of the wood beams in a corner of one of the bedrooms!  It looks like artwork.

The rugs were BEYOND!!!

Love the pop of color!!!!  You can never go wrong with a little pink!!!

The hand chair is so chic!

My husband would die for this custom in wall wine cellar!!!

I cannot decide if I like the art or the fireplace better!!!

Iconic Modern, please please can I have this chair?

This all class ping pong table was out of this world..everyone was in awe over it...

These chairs left me speechless...soooo beautiful!!!!

I found a cute model in the office...

Here is the glass fireplace looking out into the living room...perfection!

Juliska provided the outdoor table-setting...

I was literally about to put this wall with the vertical fireplace in my car...I want one so badly for my patio...

How chic does Jessica from The Entertaining House look in this Grafitti powder room!!

Even the garage was over the top amazing!!!!

The wood hood over the stove in the kitchen was breathtaking!!!
