Slow Cooker Creamed Corn

Here is another Thanksgiving side that I've been waiting to share with you...I have never served corn at our Thanksgiving dinner..which really makes no sense to me since it was probably a staple at the first Thanksgiving...And then I found this recipe on Pinterest.  I have to make it...It sounds right up my ally...quick and easy AND made in the slow cooker....Bon Appetit...

image allrecipes.com

adapted from Gimme some oven

  • 4 (15-ounce) cans whole kernel corn, drained (or 2 pounds frozen whole-kernel corn, thawed and drained)
  • 1 (8-ounce) brick cream cheese, diced
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter, diced
  • optional: 1 tablespoon honey or sugar, if you would like an extra hint of sweetness
  • fine sea salt and freshly-cracked black pepper, to taste
  1. Combine ingredients. Combine corn, cream cheese, milk, butter, honey (if using), and a pinch of salt and pepper in the bowl of a small slow cooker.  Stir briefly to combine.
  2. Slow cook: Cover and cook on low for 2-3 hours*, until the cream cheese and butter are melted.  (I recommend checking the corn every 30-45 minutes or so to give it a stir and ensure that it does not accidentally burn.)
  3. Stir and season. Stir the mixture until combined.  Then taste and season with additional salt and pepper if needed.
  4. Serve.  Serve warm and enjoy!

*****   Keep an eye on this so that it does not accidentally burn because of the cream.....

Sprucing Up Your Mantle

Last week a reader from Chicago emailed me that she wanted some tips to update her mantle.  She was feeling it looked a little dated and needed some sprucing.  I found the diagram below from Magnolia home outlining somethings you can add to your mantle for a updated look.  First you start with an anchor (like a mirror or photo) and build around it with features such as height, symmetry and natural elements!  See below for some of my favorite looks:

Book Club Monday

This Week's Book Club Monday is another Reese Witherspoon book club pick, The Giver of Stars: A Novel by Jojo Moyes (the author of the BEST book, Me Before You).  Trust me you NEED to read this now because it is soon to be a major motion picture...here is the story....

Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England.  But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically.

The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky.

What happens to them--and to the men they love--becomes an unforgettable drama of loyalty, justice, humanity and passion. These heroic women refuse to be cowed by men or by convention. And though they face all kinds of dangers in a landscape that is at times breathtakingly beautiful, at others brutal, they’re committed to their job: bringing books to people who have never had any, arming them with facts that will change their lives.

Based on a true story rooted in America’s past, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope and epic in its storytelling. Funny, heartbreaking, enthralling, it is destined to become a modern classic--a richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond.

A Dining Room Sideboard

I love the look of a dining room side board.  Last Thanksgiving was the beginning of the end of my Dining Room.  I know I have written about this but the day after Thanksgiving I was cleaning under my glass top table and I don't know what happened but it shattered in a million pieces.  I was devastated.  Since then that room has snowballed.   I really think what was missing all this time..was a good looking sideboard.  I started doing a research.  What do you think of these....head over to instagram to see what I ended up choosing!!!!!

Book Club Monday

Sorry we are off one day today and are bring you Book Club Monday one day late.  Yesterday I was working on a group sale for Hamilton for early Feb.  The date will prob be sometime during the first week..I will keep you posted.....

In the meanwhile, this week's choice is The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. It was so funny, I had this all ready to go and then I got a group text that my book club pick it for this month as well.  Everyone is loving it!!  Here is the story....

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves.
The story is told by Cyril's son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures.
Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they're together. Throughout their lives, they return to the well-worn story of what they've lost with humor and rage. But when at last they're forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested. - Amazon.com

Have You Considered Pre-Owned?

I have received a few emails about the luxury bag market.  There was another announcement that luxury retailers are going to yet again be raising their already very high prices, much to many consumers dismay.  The only good thing is that designer handbags are only becoming more and more popular and they are holding their value.  So the pre-owned market is hotter than ever.  One of my favorite sites is Fashionphile.  They were just purchased by Neiman Marcus so it is probably the safest place to buy a second hand designer handbag on the web.  They have an incredible authentication process.  Fashionphile will also buy any of the designer accessories hanging around your closet.  Its a great way to get rid of something old and get something new or to make a few extra dollars (and they can add up quickly).  All you have to do is download the app, follow a few steps, upload a couple of photos and within a few days they send you a quote.  If you agree, they send you a pre paid label.  You ship your item and they send you a check or deposit the money for you within a week or so.  The quotes are really fair, comparable if you consigned the item maybe a little higher but the best part, no waiting for your item to sell before you get your $$.  Its so easy.  I have partnered with Fashionphile this week to show you some of my favorite picks on their site.  Boy was it hard to choose.  All kidding aside, Fashionphile is a fabulous find.  Whether you are in the market to buy or just make a few extra dollars!!!  I urge you to check it out!!!

This is a classic bag,,,it's so Jackie O!!!!!!

This is the most fabulous bag...really really gorgeous!!!!

Carving Pumpkins

Are you getting ready for Halloween?  This year we did not get to carve pumpkins.  With my older 2 away at college and my youngest swamped with studying for tests, over the weekend, we decided to skip this year.  I did see some really great carving kits at CVS, when I went to get treats to hand out at my husbands office party this week (the kids were the cutest and they did tell us that we had the best selection!!!!  WOOOOO HOOOOO)....I decided to do a virtual carving this year...but maybe I might go back to CVS tomorrow AM and get those carving kits...we still have one day.  I so love Halloween...it is my dear friend Alicia's B-day..we are taking her to the NY Botanical Garden for lunch and to see their Spooky Pumpkin Garden.  More on that tomorrow!!!!
