Book Club Monday

I was so excited to hear that Ina Garten, The Barefoot Contessa's new book will be available tomorrow.  This new book is titled,  Cook Like A Pro: Recipes and Tips For Home Cooks.   Here is the summary:

In her new cookbook, Cook Like a Pro, Ina Garten shares a brand-new collection of recipes, tips, and techniques, so readers can cook with confidence no matter how much experience they have in the kitchen.

As America's most trusted and beloved cookbook author, Ina Garten--the Barefoot Contessa--has taught millions of people how to cook. A home cook at heart, Ina knows that cooking and entertaining can be difficult, so to make her recipes simple and streamlined, she tests and retests each recipe until it's as straightforward and delicious as possible. Although Ina is completely self-taught and doesn't consider herself to be a "professional" cook, she has spent decades working with chefs and learning the techniques that take their cooking to the next level. In Cook Like a Pro, Ina shares some of her most irresistible recipes and very best "pro tips," from the secret to making her custardy, slow-cooked Truffled Scrambled Eggs to the key to the crispiest and juiciest Fried Chicken Sandwiches. Ina will even show you how to make an easy yet showstopping pattern for her Chocolate Chevron Cake--your friends won't believe you decorated it yourself!

For Ina, cooking like a pro also means hosting like a pro, and along with know-how like how to tell when a filet of beef is perfectly cooked, you'll find dozens of other great ideas to boost your cooking and entertaining skills such as how to set up an elegant home bar and how to make an impressive Raspberry Baked Alaska that can be completely prepared ahead of time so all you need to do is finish it for your guests before serving. Beginner and advanced cooks alike will love Ina's delectable recipes, and if you have questions along the way, don't worry--Ina's practical cooking advice talks you through every detail, as though she were right there by your side.

With beautiful photos and a treasury of pro tips that span prepping, making, and serving, as Ina says, "You don't have to be a pro to cook like one!" - Amazon.com

Crock Pot "Fried" Apples

So the college set will be home this weekend...I want to make a really good fall dessert that everyone will like.  I saw this on Pinterest and I am dying to try it.   The recipe says that you can also serve it over pancakes or waffles.  Bon Appetit!!!

  • 12 cups of sliced apples peel on ( sour apples like Granny Smith or home grown on the tree are best!)
  • 3 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 3/4 cup of salted butter melted
  • 1/2 cup of apple juice

Slow Cooker Instructions:
  1. Set your crock pot on the high setting. Spray it with cooking spray then place the apples in the crock pot.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the cinnamon, pie spice, brown sugar and cornstarch until it's all mixed in completely.
  3. Sprinkle over the top of the apples. Pour the melted butter and apple juice over top of the mixture. Stir until everything is coated.
  4. Cook on high for 3-4 hours  (this depends on your slow cooker!) or until apples are tender and the sauce has thickened.
  5. Serve hot for the tastiest results with ice cream or whipped cream!!!!

Fall Floral Flower Arrangements

Tonight my friend Stephanie did an incredible fall floral demonstration at Waterworks for The Greenwich Design District Taste and Tour.  She taught us about using "wow" flowers in an arrangement, picking unique berries and greens from the side of the road, even I95 and that your arrangement does not always have to look exactly the same from all angles, in fact, if it doesn't it is much more interesting!!!  Stephanie is so talented...to learn more of her tips and her future classes follow her instagram HERE.

It's Sweater Weather

The other night I was wearing a cape that I bought over the summer on sale, on sale and even more on sale at Saks Off Fifth.  A friend who was with me asked me if I would post more things from the Off Fifth site that were at a good price point.  I decided to take her up on her challenge.  Since it is now "sweater weather", I was able to find a bunch of stylish sweaters for under $100.  And most have a code for an additional 30% off. Happy Shopping!!!

Book Club Monday

Ok.....I read about this book, I have been recommended this book and I have seen it all over instagram....everyone says you absolutely positively cannot put it down...Ghosted by Rose Walsh goes like this....

When Sarah meets Eddie, they connect instantly and fall in love. To Sarah, it seems as though her life has finally begun. And it's mutual: It's as though Eddie has been waiting for her, too. Sarah has never been so certain of anything. So when Eddie leaves for a long-booked vacation and promises to call from the airport, she has no cause to doubt him. But he doesn't call.

Sarah's friends tell her to forget about him, but she can't. She knows something's happened--there must be an explanation.

Minutes, days, weeks go by as Sarah becomes increasingly worried. But then she discovers she's right. There is a reason for Eddie's disappearance, and it's the one thing they didn't share with each other: the truth. - Amazon.com

Powder Gel Manicure

I noticed a few bloggers that I collaborate with have the best manicures.  I asked them about it and they all told me that they get gel manicures but not just the regular gels, powder gel manicures.  I was impressed.  In every photo, their nails are always perfect.  I have tried regular gel manicures in the past and they really don't work for me. My nails peel within the week and never look great.  I decided to give the powder gel a try.  The label says it is the 21 day manicure.  I definitely can get the powder gel to last over 2 weeks but I'm still waiting to hit the 21 day mark.  But still not bad and my nails look awesome...better than they ever have.  And the damage to my nails have been much less than the gel manicures in the past.  Now I hope I can keep it up...Here is the procedure:

To apply, you first need to use a bond polish to the whole nail to make sure the color sticks, followed by a base coat to 3/4 of the nail. Next, dip your nail into a primer-like natural powder, then do another coat of the bond. After that, you dip your nail into the powder color of your choice and tap off the excess powder, then apply another coat of the base, and do another dip into the powder. Finally, brush on one last coat of the base and let your nails air dry.

I've been getting my powder nails done at Tiffany Nails on the Post Rd in Rye (across from Jerry's) but most local nail places do the powder gel.  It costs about the same as a regular gel manicure.  I use color P38 (color numbers may vary), which is the closest to Ballet Slippers.  Bon Weekend!!!!

One Pan Autumn Chicken Dinner

Last weekend, a very special reader, Krissy, sent this great Fall dinner recipe to me.  She tried it for a recent dinner party and it was a HUGE hit.  I am so excited to try it this weekend.  Krissy said that even though you can use chicken breasts, it comes out best, using the bone in thighs!!!!  Bon Appetit!!!

adapted from Cooking Classy

  • Bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
  • Olive oil
  • Fresh herbs – rosemary, thyme, sage
  • Red wine vinegar
  • Garlic
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Sweet potato
  • Fuji apples (or other sweet baking apples)
  • Bacon
  • Salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Place pour in 2 Tbsp olive oil, red wine vinegar, herbs and garlic into a gallon size resealable bag. Add chicken and season with salt and pepper then rub mixture over chicken.
Let rest while you prep remaining ingredients.
Add sweet potatoes, apples, Brussels sprouts, and shallots to a rimmed 18 by 13-inch baking sheet. Drizzle with 2 Tbsp olive oil, season with salt and pepper then toss to coat.
Spread into an even layer.
Top with chicken pieces and sprinkle bacon over veggie/apple mixture.

Roast in preheated oven until chicken has cooked through and veggies are tender, about 30 – 35 minutes, broil during last few minutes for more browned crispy chicken skin. Serve warm.

Food Cravings......

I saw this chart on the wall of my doctor's office.  I thought it was so interesting...there are so many articles that help with healthy eating or tips for weight loss but very little to help control cravings.  I love this...and think it is worth a try the next time we are all craving a chocolate bar or cookie!!!!

Fall Apple Caramel Bread Pudding!!!

Serves: 8

4 cups day old brioche or challah bread (medium dice)

1 cup milk

1 cup cream

2 eggs

½ tsp. cinnamon

½ tsp. nutmeg

½ tsp. vanilla extract

½ raisins

1 apple (small dice)

2 tbsp. butter

1 oz. bourbon

1 tbsp. brown sugar

We recommend 2” ramekins for individual portions.

• Preheat oven to 350°.
• Cut bread and lay it out on a sheet pan.
• Drizzle bread with melted butter and bake for 4 minutes until crispy. (this will help keep it’s shape when it soaks)
• Heat milk and cream in a sauce pan and bring to a simmer.
• In a mixing bowl, combine eggs, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla extract. Mix well.
• Slowly add the combined eggs, sugar and spices to the hot milk/cream and stir well.
• Peel and cut apple and put in a sauce pan with bourbon. Add raisins and brown sugar and heat on low, just to slightly soften approximately 2 mins.
• Add to liquid bowl as well as the bread cubes and let soak for 5-10. Pour batter into a greased ramekin and bake for 20 mins.

• Let set for 10 minutes before removing from ramekins. Serve warm.
