Book Club Monday

It's hard for me to find a book that has not been read by my readers...but today's choice might be it!!!!!....One of my favorite authors Jojo Moyes (Me Before You) is releasing a new book TOMORROW, Still Me.  I am so excited to read this..I really love all of Jojo Moyes books.  Here is the summary......

Louisa Clark arrives in New York ready to start a new life, confident that she can embrace this new adventure and keep her relationship with Ambulance Sam alive across several thousand miles. She has been hired by the superrich Gopniks: Leonard and his unhappy, much younger second wife, Agnes-- and finds herself amid a never-ending array of household staff and hangers-on. But Lou is determined to get the most out of the experience and throws herself into her job and this very privileged New York life.

Soon though, Lou realizes that life in the Gopnik household is not as straightforward as it first seemed. She alos begins to make friends who inhabit a less rarefied side of New York--from the building doorman and his rambunctious family to the sisters who run the quintessential vintage clothing store downtown, to the world's crankiest neighbor, Margot De Witt, and her fierce little dog, Dean Martin.

Before she knows what's happening, Lou is mixing in New York high society, where she meets Joshua Ryan, a man who brings with him a whisper of her past. As Lou tries to keep the two sides of her world together, she finds herself carrying secrets--not all her own--that cause a catastrophic change in her circumstances. And when matters come to a head, she has to ask herself, Who is Louisa Clark? And how do you reconcile a heart that lives in two places? Amazon.com

Graze New York!!!!!!

Yesterday, I sampled the most amazing cheese board from Graze New York.  Graze was started by local mom Shari Ivler.  While raising her two young girls, Shari found herself entertaining a ton in her home.  She began making the most beautiful boards full of delicious treats to serve to her guests.  Shari decorates each board with little cards, flowers, and other special touches.  Each one is truly a work of art and uber delicious.  Everyone's eyes lit up when they saw the board.  It was sooooooo GOOOD!!!!! Boards can be made for any occasion, from an intimate dinner party to a large family party. They make great gifts too!!!  Shari does it all. She is working on some special boards for Game Day and smaller ones for Valentine's Day, so order now!!!!!!  Oh, and the best part is that you get to keep the gorgeous wooden serving board, which is fabulous!!!  I love mine!!! And cannot wait to get another!!!  Thanks Shari!!!!!!  To learn more about Graze and contact Shari and get your own Graze Board, click HERE.

Wellness Shot To Keep The Flu AWAY

I really do not get sick a lot (knock on wood).  But when I do feel something coming on, I have my methods to keep it at bay.  Last week, I was fighting the flu for 3 days and I quarantined myself so it would not get worse. Here is what helps me (but if you do think you have the flu please do see your doctor or go to the walk in)... I am a firm believer in lots of Purell all year round but especially in the winter (I keep it in my car) and I use it non stop.  Also I keep THESE adorable hand sanitizers in all my purses and my kids bags too!!  I take NyQuil before bed, use Zicam Swabs every 5 hours but I absolutely positively MUST run to Whole Foods and get ginger shots (2X per day) and pray they are not out....Luckly for me and YOU!!  I found this recipe for a homemade ginger shot that is just as good as the WF number.  Here is a quick and easy ginger shot recipe that will keep the winter colds and flu away!!!!  Stay Well Readers!!!!!

image feel the heel.com

 adapted from Janded.com

  • 1 large lemon (or two medium lemons);
  • 2-3 tablespoons of honey;
  • 2-3 teaspoons of ginger depending on how spicy you like it (I use the Dorot frozen ginger cubes)
  • a good blender – THIS is the one I use (It's awesome for smoothies as well..my girls use it daily)

  • 1. Squeeze the juice from the lemon (or lemons) into the blender, try not to get too much pulp.
    2. Add the honey
    3. Chop ginger roughly and add it to the blender as well.
    4. Mix everything for 30 seconds to one minute. Honey is quite thick and you want it to be well incorporated.
    5.  If you want it sweeter, add a little more honey.

Here are the ginger cubes..you can get them in the freezer section of the grocery store!

    Life is a Cabaret

    I don't really mention the jewel that is right in our own backyard, The Rye Arts Center.  I love stopping by to check out their amazingly curated exhibits.  I need to feature them more because we really are so lucky to have such an incredible local space available to us. The Rye Art Center has grown into the largest multi art center in our area.  The facility now includes an art gallery, art studios for children and adults, a preforming arts room, maker space, digital arts room, practice rooms and many more!!!!!  They also have incredible events like the one this Friday and Next Friday,  A Theater Cabaret, Everybody Knows I'm Guilty.  This cabaret concert by Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman is sure to be a HIT. I went last night to the rehearsal and I was blown away by the talent of the performers.  If you are in town, you NEED to go.  For more information or to buy tickets, click HERE;

The Rye Arts Center and LawnChair Theatre are pleased to announce their first LawnChair Theatre Cabaret. Everybody Knows I’m Guilty is a cabaret concert of two of the master songwriters of our time, Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman.
Newman and Cohen have each explored love, loss, religion, and politics, in finely-crafted songs that have the theatricality of short plays. In Everybody Knows I’m Guilty, Cohen’s spirituality and honesty and Newman’s skepticism and irony work together, as our company of performers present the best of these two musical poets.
Peter Green, Artistic Director of LawnChair Theatre and Rye Middle School social worker, is partnering with Musical Director Kinny Landrum, a composer, arranger, producer, and keyboardist who has worked with such unusually diverse people as Leonard Bernstein, The Meters, Carly Simon, Jimmy Cliff, David Lynch, and Leonard Cohen. He was the synthesist on the Grammy Award-winning soundtrack of the seminal TV show Twin Peaks. He has scored a number of feature films and was nominated for his score to Living the Story: The Civil Rights Movement in Kentucky. Landrum also wrote the orchestrations for the Broadway show In My Life.
Audiences will be delighted by the eight performers who remind us that the human voice is an instrument that can convey beauty while tapping into deep emotional truth. All were professionally trained as actors or singers.
Wine and beer will be available for sale.  Please leave your lawnchairs at home.

    Book Club Monday

Today's selection was recommended to me because it is "sharply funny" and I'm sharing it because I think we could all use some comic relief!!!!!  HA!!!  Seven Days of Us: A Novel by Francesca Hornak is a New York Post required reading book, and that is enough for me!!!!!  Here is the story:

It’s Christmas, and for the first time in years the entire Birch family will be under one roof. Even Emma and Andrew’s elder daughter—who is usually off saving the world—will be joining them at Weyfield Hall, their aging country estate. But Olivia, a doctor, is only coming home because she has to. Having just returned from treating an epidemic abroad, she’s been told she must stay in quarantine for a week…and so too should her family.

For the next seven days, the Birches are locked down, cut off from the rest of humanity—and even decent Wi-Fi—and forced into each other’s orbits. Younger, unabashedly frivolous daughter Phoebe is fixated on her upcoming wedding, while Olivia deals with the culture shock of being immersed in first-world problems.

As Andrew sequesters himself in his study writing scathing restaurant reviews and remembering his glory days as a war correspondent, Emma hides a secret that will turn the whole family upside down.

In close proximity, not much can stay hidden for long, and as revelations and long-held tensions come to light, nothing is more shocking than the unexpected guest who’s about to arrive... - AMAZON.com

    Book Club Monday

Happy Martin Luther King day!!!!  I have been trying to sit down all day to write this post but the day really got away from me.  I am so excited about today's book club choice.  It has been on my list for a while and I am just getting around to reading it, The Last Mrs Parrish: A Novel by Liv Constantine.  I am telling you this is just what we need for these dreary, cold January days!!!!  It has been called spellbinding, Mr Riplyesque, and there is a shocking twist at the end!!!  Woo Hoo!!!!!   Here is the summary:

Amber Patterson is fed up. She’s tired of being a nobody: a plain, invisible woman who blends into the background. She deserves more—a life of money and power like the one blond-haired, blue-eyed goddess Daphne Parrish takes for granted.
To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne—a socialite and philanthropist—and her real-estate mogul husband, Jackson, are a couple straight out of a fairy tale.
Amber’s envy could eat her alive . . . if she didn't have a plan. Amber uses Daphne’s compassion and caring to insinuate herself into the family’s life—the first step in a meticulous scheme to undermine her. Before long, Amber is Daphne’s closest confidante, traveling to Europe with the Parrishes and their lovely young daughters, and growing closer to Jackson. But a skeleton from her past may undermine everything that Amber has worked towards, and if it is discovered, her well-laid plan may fall to pieces.  - Amazon.com

    Michelangelo At The Met

Today I went with a group of readers to see the "once in a lifetime" Michelangelo 6 room exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  We hired curator, Emily McElwreath of of Sidel and McElwreath to give us a tour of the incredible pieces that depict Michelangelo as a supreme draftsman and designer.  Emily explained to us that this show was 10 years in the making.  All of the pieces are from 54 private collections throughout the US and Europe.  They even needed approval from the Queen to show some of the featured works.  Because of the age of the pieces, the exhibit is under dim lighting and after this all of the art will "rest' in storage for 3 years.  Most of these drawings and sculpture have never been on display.  There is a reproduction of the Sistine Chapel, with the actual drawings of the images prior to them being painted.  This was our favorite part of the tour.   We stayed in the Chapel room wayyyy tooo long in awe of how amazing it was.  The exhibition runs until, February 12th...run don't walk!!!!!  Maybe you will see me there because I am definitely going again!!!!!

    Homemade Bread For The Win

Around here we make tons of soup for the long cold winter days.  I recently saw an article about making homemade bread and how easy it was and how well it pairs with a bowl of winter soup.  I did some research and found a really easy recipe for making homemade bread.  Just a few ingredients, a bread pan and hot oven and voila!!!  Last weekend my son had a bunch of college friends come and stay with us.  We had just made 2 loaves of this bread.  OMG!!  They could not get enough...they LOVED it.  I did feel a little like Little House on the Prairie and that we might be churning our own butter next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HA!!!  But honestly, the bread was a total winner!!!!  Give it a try this weekend!!!  Bon Appetit!!!!!!

    image lilluna.com

adapted from A Taste of Home

    INGREDIENTS

    • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
    • 2-1/4 cups warm water (110° to 115°)
    • 3 tablespoons sugar
    • 1 tablespoon salt
    • 2 tablespoons canola oil
    • 6-1/4 to 6-3/4 cups all-purpose flour

    DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the sugar, salt, oil and 3 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, to form a soft dough.
Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 8-10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1-1/2 hours.
Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide dough in half. Shape each into a loaf. Place in two greased 9x5-in. loaf pans. Cover and let rise until doubled, 30-45 minutes.
Bake at 375° for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and bread sounds hollow when tapped. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool. Yield: 2 loaves (16 slices each).

Some Wellness Tips for the New Year

I recently received an article from Sarah Davis of Body Balance 365 about Staying on Track after the holidays.  I absolutely love her suggestions and thought I would share them with you....I am really going to try to share more wellness posts in the New Year!!!  Here is an awesome start.........

    1. Take a class! It really is that simple. Not only is it a great workout, but it will give you more energy for the rest of the day, and also lift your spirits. Added bonus—exercises that are weight bearing, will boost your metabolism for a full 24 hours, so maybe you can even have a second cookie?

    2. Hydrate! As temperatures drop, and we no longer feel “hot” during the day, we often forget to drink enough water. The temptation to have an extra coffee at 4:00 as it begins to get dark, only further increases your need to drink more water. Throw in a cocktail or two, and you are officially dehydrated. While cold water may be less appealing this time of year, sipping hot water with lemon and herbal teas throughout the day is a great way to stay hydrated. Keep your water pitcher or Brita on the kitchen counter so water stays at room temperature, and always bring a water bottle to class. Even if you don’t feel like you are "sweating", your muscles always perform better when you are well hydrated.

    3. Watch the sugar! And I don’t mean cookies…Sugar is everywhere—it is in bread, yogurt, condiments, marinades, and even salad dressings. Always be sure to read labels. While some sugar is absolutely fine, it is easy to overindulge, which leaves you feeling puffy and with low energy. Taking a class will help you sweat out the toxins and eliminate further sugar cravings. You can’t argue with that...

    4. Cook more! Or at least eat more meals at home. Making a smoothie before a morning class gives you the perfect balance of protein, fats, fiber, and “plants" to survive anything else the instructor can throw at you! Make a big salad for lunch or a pot of soup, and then no matter where the evening takes you, your body has had two nourishing meals of whole unprocessed foods--and a great workout. Even at the “healthiest” restaurants you still cannot control what you are putting into your body.

    5. Get outside! Living in Rye, I often see women walking to and from the Go Figure studio, walking their dogs after class, or meeting a friend from class to talk a long walk later in the day. Such a perfect compliment to strength work—and the vitamin D and oxygen to the brain cannot be found on a treadmill! It may be hard to rally during the cold winter months, but the benefits of exercising outdoors, combined with the socialization of seeing a friend are so good for our health. Put down your To-Do list and take a fast walk around the block to clear your head—extra credit if you call a friend to join you.

See if you can incorporate all five of these tips into your week. The combination of a healthy diet and exercise  is your best weapon to not get sick and feel your best.
