Come From Away

The next broadway show on my list is Come From Away.  I have heard that it is so good and a definite must see this season.  Here is the story in case you did not hear!!!!

Come From Away won the Tony for Best Direction in a Musical.  It tells the amazing story of how thousands of travelers were grounded in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in a tiny Canadian town and how they were heartwarmingly cared for.

On 9/11 38 planes with 6,579 passengers landed and were stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland.  The story tells of the camaraderie of how the townspeople opened their homes and hearts and hosted this international community of strangers, which basically doubled their population!

Easy Orange Chicken

I love this Easy Orange Chicken recipe.  I will increase the recipe and serve it with toothpicks and bring it to a Fourth of July party.  However, it is also great served over rice for dinner.  Either way, it is a total crowd pleaser!!!!

Easy Orange Chicken
adapted from Listotic

4 chicken breasts
3/4 cup bbq sauce
3/4 sweet orange marmalade
2 TBSP Soy Sauce

Cut the chicken breasts into bite-sized chunks and cook in slow cooker for 1 1/2 hours on high (stir half way through)

While the chicken is cooking, mix together bbq sauce, marmalade, and soy sauce until well blended.

After 1 1/2 hours drain the chicken from the crock pot and pour the mixture in the crock pot with the chicken.  Make sure to well coat the chicken.  Cook on high for an additional 1 1/2 hour ( you may need to add time if the chicken needs to cook a little more).  The sauce might look runny but thickens ALOT while it cools.

Top with green onions and sesame seeds and serve!!!

The Low Down On Lashes

I love long lashes but I have never had luck with having false eyelashes applied.  I was so allergic to the glue that I found it so painful but I did love the look.  However, I am persistent and kept trying.  I recently found some options for lush, long lashes that you will LOVE.

I went to a salon (well a casual salon) to have mink eyelash extensions applied and it was a huge success.  The process is long but they seat you in a very comfy chair and it became painless.  Really...no allergic reaction and I love the result.  If you are local the salon is called Angel Tips and it is in Stamford, CT (it is a chain so there might be one near you, if you are out of the area).  And, you are in luck...there is a Groupon for almost $50 off the first application.  Click HERE for more information.

image Groupon

Maybe you don't feel like sitting for an hour to have the eyelashes applied or the maintenance is too much for you (you need to have them refilled about every 3 weeks).  Well, I have the most incredible option for you.....One Two Cosmetics Magnetic Lashes.   I ordered these and they are really amazing.  I will admit, it takes some practice to get them just right.  I watched every youtube video out there, on this product, but they are super easy to apply (once you get the hang of it) and look really great.

Lastly, maybe false eyelashes are not for you....I get it!!!!   Don't worry, I've got you covered.  In my opinion, the best mascara to zoop up your natural lashes is, hands down, Benefit's They're Real Beyond Mascara (click HERE).

Book Club Monday

This week's Book Club Monday is an awesome fun beach read.  It is The Assistants by Camille Perri.  I read that this book has been called "addictive", "funny" and "smart".  Here is the story:

Rule #1: All important men have assistants. Rule #2: Men rule the world. Still. Rule #3: There is enough money. There is so much money.

Tina Fontana is a thirty-year-old executive assistant to Robert Barlow, the CEO of Titan Corp., a multinational media conglomerate. She’s excellent at her job and beloved by her famous boss—but after six years of making reservations and pouring drinks from bottles that cost more than her rent, the glamour of working for a media company in New York has completely faded, but her student loan debt has not.

When a technical error with Robert’s expense report presents Tina with the opportunity to pay off the entire balance of her loans with what would essentially be pocket change for her boss, she hesitates. She’s always played by the rules, but this would be a life-changer. As Tina begins to fall down the rabbit hole of her morally questionable plan, other assistants with crushing debt and fewer scruples approach her to say that they want in. Before she knows it, she’s at the forefront of a movement that has implications far beyond what anyone anticipated.

Featuring an eclectic clan of coconspirators, a love interest far too handsome to be trusted, and a razor-sharp voice full of wry humor, The Assistants is a rallying cry for the leagues of overeducated and underpaid women who are asking themselves, How is it that after all these years, we are still assistants? - Amazon.com

Book Club Monday

OK readers, I am finally sharing with you my pick for the best read of the summer.   And, it is Fitness Junkie: ANovel by my friends the AWESOME Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza.  I loved their first book, The Knockoff and was waiting with bated breath for this new one.  I just received an advanced copy.  Thank you so much Doubleday Books!!!!!! And I read it from cover to cover almost immediately!!! Here is the story (you are going to LOVE it)...

When Janey Sweet, CEO of a couture wedding dress company, is photographed in the front row of a fashion show eating a bruffin—the delicious lovechild of a brioche and a muffin—her best friend and business partner, Beau, gives her an ultimatum: Lose thirty pounds or lose your job. Sure, Janey has gained some weight since her divorce, and no, her beautifully cut trousers don't fit like they used to, so Janey throws herself headlong into the world of the fitness revolution, signing up for a shockingly expensive workout pass, baring it all for Free the Nipple yoga, sweating through boot camp classes run by Sri Lankan militants and spinning to the screams of a Lycra-clad instructor with rage issues. At a juice shop she meets Jacob, a cute young guy who takes her dumpster-diving outside Whole Foods on their first date. At a shaman's tea ceremony she meets Hugh, a silver fox who holds her hand through an ayahuasca hallucination And at a secret exercise studio Janey meets Sara Strong, the wildly popular workout guru whose special dance routine has starlets and wealthy women flocking to her for results that seem too good to be true. As Janey eschews delicious carbs, pays thousands of dollars to charlatans, and is harassed by her very own fitness bracelet, she can't help but wonder: Did she really need to lose weight in the first place? A hilarious send-up of the health and wellness industry, Fitness Junkie is a glorious romp through the absurd landscape of our weight-obsessed culture. -Amazon.com

Fitness Junkie is going to be released on July 11th, but you can order it HERE on Amazon so that you are able to get it hot off the presses.  I am looking forward to catching up with Lucy this summer in the Hamptons and taking an exercise class with her (perhaps one of the very ones she frequented while writing the book) and getting all the behind the scenes juicy details.  Stay Tuned!!!

Dry Erase Homework Wall

I had an awesome Fashionable Friend Friday post in the works for you but I needed a little bit more time to perfect it, so I am doing a post on something that has been a HUGE "thing" around here.  My girls have been BEGGING me for a dry erase/whiteboard wall.  They use whiteboards in school and really wanted one at home to help them with their homework and to study.  Of course, I said no about a million times.  First of all, I could not imagine anything worse in the middle of our living quarters.  It would just look ugly and always be an eyesore, especially with all the writing and erasers and everything else that comes along with it. However, at Christmastime I finally broke down and designated a back hallway (completely out of site from our family, visitors, actually pretty much out of site for anyone) for the whiteboard wall.  I purchased removable whiteboard wall stickers (HERE) which are easy to apply and remove, in case I really regretted my decision.  I got a nice container to hold all the markers and erasers and a Chinese stool for my girls to sit on or climb up on to reach the top.  Well, that white board wall is such a hit.  They use it for every test.  They write out their notes, organize information, work out tons and tons of math problems and the list goes on and on.  As much as I hate to admit, it was a huge win win and my girls tell me it helps them sooo much and takes a lot of the stress out of preparing for tests.

Father's Day Dinner From the Barefoot Contessa

I am starting to plan my Father's Day menu and I stumbled upon this awesome recipe from the Barefoot Contessa.  This Slow-Roasted Filet with Basil Parmesan Mayonnaise is so delicious and easy to make, that Dad will think he is at a 5 Star Restaurant!!!  Bon Appetit!!!!  Also, click HERE for my Father's Day gift guide for all you last minute shoppers!!

Slow Roasted Filet with Basil Parmesan Mayonaise
adapted from The Barefoot Contessa

  • 1 whole filet of beef tenderloin, trimmed and tied (4½ pounds)
  • 3 tablespoons good olive oil
  • 4 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper
  • 10 to 15 branches fresh tarragon
  • Basil Parmesan Mayonnaise, for serving (see recipe)
Preheat the oven to 275 degrees. Use an oven thermometer to be sure your oven temperature is accurate.
Place the filet on a sheet pan and pat it dry with paper towels. Brush the filet all over with the oil, reserving about half a tablespoon. Sprinkle it all over with the salt and pepper (it will seem like a lot but believe me, it makes a difference). Place the tarragon branches around the beef, tying them in 4 or 5 places with kitchen string to keep them in place, and then brush the tarragon with the reserved oil.
Roast the filet of beef for 1¼ to 1½ hours, until the temperature registers 125 degrees in the center for rare and 135 degrees for medium-rare. I place the thermometer horizontally through the end of the beef. Cover the filet with aluminum foil and allow to rest for 20 minutes. Slice thickly and serve warm or at room temperature with Basil Parmesan Mayonnaise.
Basil Parmesan Mayonnaise (Makes About 2 Cups)
  • 2 extra-large egg yolks, at room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves, lightly packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup vegetable oil, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup good olive oil, at room temperature
Place the egg yolks, lemon juice, Parmesan, mustard, basil, garlic, 1 tablespoon salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper in a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Process for 20 seconds, until smooth. Combine the vegetable oil and olive oil in a 2-cup liquid measuring cup. With the processor running, slowly pour the oil mixture through the feed tube to make a thick emulsion. Taste for seasonings—the mayonnaise is a sauce so it should be highly seasoned. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use; it will keep for up to a week.

Important Home Lead Testing

I recently learned about a very serious issue plaguing our water supply.  Millions of American homes are not safe from lead contamination in drinking water and many of these homes are right here in New York and Connecticut.  In fact, 20% of the lead blood levels found in our children come from water AFTER it enters our properties (EPA).  I did some research and found a company to test our home pipe lead levels!!!!

image cnn.com

The danger arises when lead, galvanized, or brass pipes periodically contaminate residents' water. This exposes people to lead levels in drinking water above the EPA's recommended parts per billion. In most cases, contaminated pipes only produce dangerous lead levels some of the time, such as when the pipes are agitated. Passing trucks, snow plows, and nearby road work are common ways for lead particles to break loose from pipes and solder. Water can also become contaminated after sitting for as little as six hours.

image American Vintage Home
Enter, Lead Pipe Testing LLC.  This company will come into your
home and test your private water line, which runs from the street into your house.  After their analysis, they will tell you if your water contains dangerous levels of lead.  Furthermore, within the past years, local water companies have sent letters to their customers urging them to test the water lines on their properties.  The cost to do this testing is quite reasonable and Lead Pipe Testing will work with your plumber or can recommend one, to help rectify the existing problem, if any. For more information or to schedule you own testing, click http://www.leadpipetesting.com or contact the founder, Dave Thomas directly at 203-912-7032 for a free consultation.

Book Club Monday

Today's Book Club Monday choice is Mistakes Were Made (Some in French): a Memoir by Fiona Lewis.  I interviewed Fiona last Friday and was soooo impressed.  Fiona is an actress, model, author and all around "It" girl.  Her memoir is chock full of Hollywood stores, did I mention she was a Bond Girl?  But probably the best parts of the book are her tales of the run down Chateau in France that she renovated that truly "rescued" her.  Here is the summary of this book from Amazon:

Having lived a perfectly satisfactory life in California for over two decades, Fiona Lewis wakes up one day in her fifties and asks herself, Is this it? Is this the existence I’m meant to have? She can hardly complain. After all, her life has been full of adventure and privilege: London and Paris in the ’60s, Los Angeles in the heady ’70s. Now, however, she feels lost, as if she were slipping backward over the edge of a ravine, abandoned not only by her old self, but by that reliable standby, optimism. Realizing she has to find a way to reinvent herself, she impulsively buys a rundown chateau in the South of France. (Her husband is not pleased.)

Alone in the depths of the countryside, she contemplates her childhood, her affairs––Roman Polanski, Roger Vadim––her years as an actress in some good and some questionable films, and her first Hollywood marriage to the damaged son of a movie star. As the renovation drags on, fighting with a band of impossible French workmen, she is forced to battle her own fears: her failure to become a real success, her inability to have children, and her persistent fear of aging.

And she has to contend with her husband, who has no interest in the French countryside. In fact, he resents her obsession with France, with the house, with the renovations. The house seems to have a hold over her, and he’s not wrong. He reluctantly visits and is annoyed by the cost of the renovation. Was she not content with him in LA? Why can’t she just be happy?

It’s an age-old question and one every woman must confront, along with aging, lost love, and missed opportunities. Yet, Fiona’s wit and wisdom prevail. And this provocative, brave memoir takes a stunning turn when all those unanswered questions develop into a tender and unexpected romance.

Le Specs

I am so lucky that the sun has not been shining here in New York because I cannot seem to find any of my sunglasses.  All of my favorite pairs have somehow disappeared.  Sooooo I have been on a mad search for new shapes and sizes.  I figure since I am starting fresh I should try something different...Ok,  so I checked a few sites and OMG!!! I was horrified...when did sunglasses become so expensive???!!!!?????????  I went on my one of my favorite websites, Net A Porter and found a company called Le Specs.  Le Specs was founded in the 1970's but was recently relaunched.  It is an Australian company that combines a street look with a music look and have become a favorite of celebs and fashionistas everywhere!!!!  But I forgot the best part most of the styles are $100 and under!!  I like THESE and THESE and THESE and THESE.

5 Ingredient Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

I saw a blogger make these the other day and I knew that they would be the perfect thing to share this week.  We have been focusing so much on easy family dinners for the past couple of months that it is the perfect time for something sweet!!!  Bon Appetit!!!!

image all recipes

adapted from a pinch of lovely

  • 2 cups lightly packed coconut sugar
  • eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 16-ounce jar creamy peanut butter (1 1/4 cups)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the coconut sugar and eggs and whisk until smooth. Whisk in the vanilla and salt until blended.
  3. Add the peanut butter and whisk until the dough is smooth and the peanut butter has completely blended into the batter (you might need to switch to a big spoon toward the end, which you’ll need for mixing in the chocolate chips anyway). Add the chocolate chips and stir until the chocolate chips are evenly incorporated.
  4. For cookies that stay perfectly mounded, chill the dough for 15 minutes before proceeding. Use a 1-tablespoon cookie dough scoop or two spoons to scoop heaping tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving 1 to 2 inches of space around each one. Chill any remaining dough while you bake the first batch.
  5. Bake until the cookies are golden at the edges but still just a little underdone in the center, 11 to 13 minutes. Let the cookies rest on the hot baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them with a metal spatula to a cooling rack to cool completely. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  6. These cookies keep well at room temperature for about 4 days, and freeze well for up to 3 months.
